CUSTOM MADE optimised packaging
An electronic appliance manufacturer was experiencing difficulties with material deliveries, storage and distribution to production lines. One of the issues investigated by our SGL team was their packaging policy. This was found to be inefficient and also:
- Potentially hazardous in storage and transport
- Not easy to handle at the point of production
- Bulky and taking up too much storage space
- Not highly efficient for small amount of parts in one package
- Mainly One Way packaging instead of returnable
- Too easily damaged
This resulted in increased storage, transport and manipulation costs - not forgetting the damage rate issue. SGL Europe offered and applied the packaging knowledge and expertise to address all these problems.
OUR SOLUTION
Our solution optimised all packaging to maximise efficiency and safety in warehouse, logistics and production. We did this by:
- Analysing materials to find more cost-effective, durable solutions
- Modifying current packaging dividers to store 40% more parts per same box
- Modifying other packages to be more stable, stackable and more than double their capacity
- Modifying the kitting request to radically speed up the kitting process
- Implementing accurate and permanent packaging flow control across the logistics chain
- Use of Returnable Transport Packaging "RTP" units (pallets) and Returnable Standard Packaging "RSP" units (boxes, bags etc)
RESULTS/BENEFITS
The changes result in Zero packaging unit losses and damages as well as minimising storage space consumption.
Modifications to the packaging design make it more economical and minimise the risk of damage. Parts are now cheaper, easier and safer to store and transport. And using Returnable Transport Packaging (RTP) units means no need to purchase replacements.
As more parts are now stored in fewer boxes there are significant cost and space savings across the whole supply chain. They can also be re-used so they're much more economical. Positive outcomes include:
- Kitting time reduced from 35 min to 1 min per box
- Less boxes so cheaper to store and move
- Zero expenditure on new packaging
- Greater durability and ease of movement
- Less storage space needed
